Shed Happens: How to Manage Summer Shedding Without Losing Your Mind
Ah, summer—the season of sunshine, beach days, and... tumbleweeds of fur rolling across your living room floor. If it feels like your pet is shedding enough to knit a small sweater (or five), you’re not alone. Warmer weather naturally kicks shedding into high gear for many dogs and cats. But don’t worry—you can survive shedding season and keep your pet photo-ready.
As a professional pet photographer (and pet fur enthusiast by default), I’ve seen it all—from sleek, freshly groomed coats to fluff explosions mid-session. Here’s how to manage summer shedding without losing your mind—or your lint roller.
🐾 Why Does My Pet Shed So Much in Summer?
Just like you might swap jeans for shorts in the summer, your pet also ditches their extra insulation. Dogs and cats with undercoats, in particular, shed heavily to regulate body temperature in warmer months. It’s totally normal—but it can feel like an avalanche of fur.
✂️ Grooming Tips That Help (and Improve Photos!)
While you can’t stop shedding completely, a consistent grooming routine makes a huge difference—and it also leads to better photo results. Here’s what I recommend:
1. Brush Often, Brush Right
Brushing your pet a few times a week (daily if they’re a heavy shedder) helps remove loose hair before it lands on your black pants. Use tools like a slicker brush for long-haired pets or a de-shedding rake for double coats. Bonus: It brings out their natural shine—hello, gorgeous photos!
2. Baths Are Your Friend
A good bath with a de-shedding shampoo can loosen undercoat fur and make brushing more effective. Just make sure your pet is comfortable with baths—nobody wants a soggy dog grudge.
3. Keep It Cool (Literally)
Avoid shaving your pet unless advised by a vet. Fur protects them from both heat and sunburn. Instead, opt for a tidy trim and keep your home cool with fans, shade, and hydration.
4. Wipe Down for Shine
Right before your photo session, use a damp cloth or pet wipe to gently smooth stray hairs. It gives your pet’s coat a polished look—and saves me from editing out fur specks in post!
📸 The Photography Bonus of a Well-Groomed Pet
Grooming isn’t just good for your furniture—it makes for better portraits. Clean coats catch the light beautifully, eyes pop more clearly without face fluff, and your pet looks as vibrant and healthy as they feel.
That said—if your pet rolls in dirt 10 minutes before a shoot, don’t panic. I’ve photographed muddy paws, drool beards, and everything in between. It’s all part of the story, and sometimes the “messy” moments make the best memories.
🐶 In Short: Don’t Stress the Shed
Summer shedding can feel endless, but with a little prep, you can keep your pet comfy, your home fur-free(ish), and your photos picture-perfect. Whether you're just trying to make it through another day without fur on your dinner plate or getting ready for a professional session with me—remember: shed happens, and we’ve got this.
